A combination of traditional acoustic music influenced by Jazz, chamber, and new age styles with improvisation on mandolins, guitar, soprano sax, violins, bass and percussion and featured on the Weather Channel.
"Tunes such as Wind Dance, As the Crow Flies, and Pastel Fantasy all contain images of the openness and beauty of the desert. Smith's music covers a wider area and he also brings in violin, cello, soprano sax, and bass to contrast and support his playing." The new CD from STEVE SMITH and HARD ROAD
STEVE SMITH and HARD ROAD bring the traditional sounds of Old-time, Bluegrass and Gospel music and blend in a variety of original vocal and instrumental works to create their own modern/retro sounds of string band music. HARD ROAD features Steve Smith (mandolin, mandola, guitar and vocals), Wayne Shrubsall (banjo, vocals), Chris Sanders (vocals), Bob Hull (guitar, vocals) and Eli Copeland (bass, vocals).
STEVE SMITH and HARD ROAD evolved into a full working group as an extension of Smith's live studio recording, Hard Road (dn444) released in June 2004. The group has been playing festivals and concerts in the Southwest and Rocky Mountain regions including Colorado, Nevada, Arizona, Texas, Wyoming and their home state of New Mexico. They recently returned from their first East Coast tour.
HARD ROAD'S latest CD was released in August 2005:
Meet Me By The River (dn545) is a collection of five original works, three traditional tunes, a new song from Steve Spurgin ("I Owe My Soul"), a Bill Monroe classic ("Rocky Road Blues") and a song from Joan Baez ("I'm with You"). The CD is on the Desert Night label and features traditional music legend Byron Berline on fiddle.
