more about steve
Steve Smith has been performing for nearly thirty years in about as many types of musical situations as one can imagine. He has appeared as a solo artist, bandleader, in-demand sideman, session player and producer in traditional bluegrass (his first love), old-time, Celtic, new acoustic, jazz and chamber music. One of the premiere mandolin players in America, Steve is a well-known instructor for lessons and workshops.
Steve’s most recent recordings include “Only So Fast” (April, 2008) with his group Hard Road and “Made To Last” (October, 2008) with the Alan Munde Gazette. He appears on the latest release by guitarist extraordinaire Jim Hurst, “A Box of Chocolates” and on “Bungalow” by singer/songwriter Bob Einweck which he also produced.
When not working with Hard Road or the Alan Munde Gazette, Steve tours as a duo with his writing partner Chris Sanders performing their original vocal and instrumental music, and as a solo performer on vocals, mandolin, mandola, and guitar. His solo shows feature his smoky tenor, original tunes and unique arrangements of traditional and modern music, from delicate fingerstyle to hard driving rhythms.
